Dining Out: Non La
There are times when I get a craving for Thai and Vietnamese food that is so acute it is almost palpable. In situations like that, and they occur frequently, I head to Non La in Lakeway just off 620.
Owners Sean and Jeanne have fashioned a restaurant named after a traditional Thai straw hat. The food is first rate and fiery. The Vietnamese Phos are a blast with boatloads of flavor. The appetizers have their own particular kick to them and I would expect nothing less from Non La.
The Salt and Pepper Wings are marinated with salt, black pepper and herbs and are wok tossed with onions. Smashing! One has to love this flavor.
Likewise, the Mermaids in Blankets. These are Vietnamese royal rolls filled with angel hair noodles, mushrooms, onions and carrots. The texture is delicate and the flavor enticing: smooth and evocative.
The traditional Corn and Yam patties are flash fried with amazing flavor. Not only are they very healthy, they're very tasty. The sweet and sour sauce complements beautifully.
Don't leave Non La without trying the Brisket Pho. This wholesome soup begins with a killer beef broth and of course the wonderful angel hair noodles.
If beef is not your forte, add shrimp and you still get the same wonderful tastes. The classic Pad Thai is in good hands at Non La. The noodles are wok tossed with crushed peanuts, bean sprouts, scallions and eggs. The taste, as it should be, is riveting.
